Owner Michael has been in the moving business since the 1980s. He worked across delivery service, commercial and office moves, household moving, and both small and large van lines before specializing in pianos. That range is where the technique came from.
In the late 1980s he went out on his own and formed a moving company built to handle all of it. As the industry changed, the business changed with it, and through the housing boom of the late 1990s he concentrated on household and office moves from Maine to Florida. That decade shaped the rest of his career.
In the early 1990s he brought his youngest brother, Patrick, into the business, moving both households and pianos. Patrick learned the craft in his teens, and as the years went on he moved further into pianos, forming Tri-state NJ piano moving to focus on it properly. Piano moving is a specialized operation in its own right, and it calls for a different set of skills from general moving.
The two of them ran separate companies for years, referring work back and forth, before combining into a single business with several operations under it.
In 2005 they formed MMS, and it operates today under one banner: pianos first, along with antiques, large objects and full household goods.
Over those years they built a contact network that lets them travel up and down the East Coast, out toward the Great Lakes states and south. The client base runs from the Northeast through the mid-Atlantic to the Southeast. Some of the crew have worked together for 20 years, others for five.
Plenty more went into building the company. Robert, the oldest brother, spent his career in computer networking and team leadership, and he set up the marketing side. James, whose career has been in the military and in carpentry before he moved into the New York elevator union, now helps run the office, builds crates and troubleshoots whatever mechanical problem comes up.
Add the parents who backed every version of the plan, and the cousins and friends who pitched in along the way. It takes a community to build anything worth building.
